Course Description

The course is an intensive Teacher Training program designed to impart and refine the basic skills necessary to become a certified introductory level teacher in the Iyengar® Yoga method. It covers the basic and progressive study of asana, pranayama, anatomy, yoga philosophy and teaching skills.

The course content is balanced between direct teaching, student teaching, guided practice, and theory. Emphasis is placed on experiencing the validity of what is taught in class instead of memorizing mere words. Guided practice and peer work help develop the students' understanding, knowledge, confidence, and ability further.

Home assignments include reading, writing and practice logs. We review and correct your logs to help you practice more effectively. As your practice deepens and improves, your foundation for teaching broadens.

Trainees are encouraged to meet weekly with one another to reinforce the lessons learned.

This is the most comprehensive hatha yoga teacher training available in Slovenia and neighbouring countries (Austria, Croatia, etc.). It is a preparation for Iyengar® Yoga certification which is recognized world-wide. In many EU countries this is considered as a job training.

Five basic areas of training:

ASANA & PRANAYAMA: You will study and teach the 64 asanas and 3 pranayamas as outlined in the Teacher In Training & Introductory Syllabi in the Iyengar® Yoga Certification Manual.

ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY: We will introduce you to basic human anatomy and physiology. In particular, you will study the ways in which asana and pranayama affect the systems of the human body.

TEACHING METHODOLOGY: You will study and practice essential techniques of teaching group classes. A few examples are: how to setup a class, effective demonstrations, learning to "see," pacing, sequencing, linking, and much more.

PHILOSOPHY: You will read from yoga texts such as Light on Yoga, Light on Pranayama, Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, and the Bhagavad Gita. We will emphasize the integration of these principles into your practice and teaching.

WORKING WITH HEALTH PROBLEMS: Common ailments and conditions typically seen in a yoga class will be covered. Areas include: Low back, neck, knees, shoulders, wrists, high and low blood pressure, headaches and menstruation.

Defining the Iyengar® method

Iyengar® Yoga is a complete approach to physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual transformation, bringing physical health and vitality, mental clarity, wisdom, and emotional serenity.

Iyengar® Yoga uses the physical reality of the body to know our minds and the deepest parts of ourselves as human beings.  The infinite perfectibility of the postures or asanas provides a pathway into the development of our intelligence and our ability to concentrate and sustain focus.  This intelligent practice develops our ability to grow and to separate what is worthwhile and productive from what to leave behind.

The method offers:

  • A safe and systematic progression of yoga postures to develop each student’s ability and skill, both within each class and from class to class
  • Sequencing that develops strength, flexibility, stamina, concentration, and body alignment
  • Highly developed teaching methodology
    • Precise use of language
    • Demonstration and teaching of specific points to develop understanding and intelligent action
    • Individual correction and adjustment of students, when necessary
  • Integration of the yoga philosophy with the practice of asana
  • Relevance of practice and incorporation into daily life
  • Ways to deal with various ailments and stress through Yoga
  • Use of props, such as blankets, blocks, and straps, to facilitate learning and adjust yoga postures to individual needs

The method is named after B.K.S. Iyengar (1918-2014) from Pune, India, who reigns as one of the most influential yogis of this time. In his 90's, he was still teaching thousands of students from all over the world, encouraging them to penetrate deeper into the experience of each pose. This is the trademark of Iyengar® Yoga - an intense focus on the subtleties of each posture.

Iyengar® Yoga, a form of Hatha Yoga, focuses initially on the structural alignment of the physical body through the development of asanas. Through the practice of a system of asanas, it aims to unite the body, mind and spirit for health and well being. Iyengar® Yoga is considered a powerful tool to relieve the stresses of modern-day life which in turn can help promote total physical and spiritual well being. It is firmly based on the traditional eight limbs of yoga as expounded by Patanjali in his Yoga Sutras, emphasizing the development of strength, stamina, flexibility and balance, as well as concentration and meditation .

Iyengar pioneered the use of "props" such as cushions, benches, blocks, straps etc. which function as aids allowing beginners to experience asanas more easily and fully than might otherwise be possible without several years of practice. Props also allow tired or ill students to enjoy the benefits of many asanas via fully "supported" methods requiring less muscular effort.

Standing poses are emphasized in Iyengar® Yoga. They build strong legs, increase general vitality, and improve circulation, coordination and balance, ensuring a strong foundation for study of more advanced poses. Unlike more experiential approaches where students are encouraged to independently "find their way" to the asanas by imitating the teacher, an Iyengar® Yoga class is highly verbal and precise, with misalignments and errors actively corrected. Iyengar® has trained thousands of teachers, who complete 2-5 years of rigorous training for the introductory level of certification (higher-level certification may take a decade or more).

Mr. Iyengar has also developed extensively ways of applying his practice to various ailments, diseases, and disorders.
